WESTVIEW SKI TEAM
We are proud to announce that Westview Ski Team sent two individuals to State last year:
Jason Higgins: #3 combined; #6 Giant Slalom; #4 Slalom
Matthew Higgins: #2 Slalom
ORGANIZATION
Westview Ski Team is one of the 14 high schools that comprise the Metro League Interscholastic Ski Racing Association. It is administered by advisors and a coaching staff. The program structures its operations and responsibilities in accordance with District 48 athletic guidelines and OISRA rules and regulations.
INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS
Primarily, the team's objective is to develop a team that will be in races with other Metro League teams. This is done by providing each skier with basic ski techniques and race tactics to ski at this level of competition. No previous racing experience is required. At any ski level, the program will help to "stretch" their skills. We also focus on developing personal motivation, positive thinking and good sportsmanship behavior at practices and races.
RACE SEASON
The program starts in early November with dryland training after school. It is important to attend dryland training for both injury prevention, race performance and team cooperation.
*Dryland training is for conditioning of each skier to meet the physical rigors required in race competition. The training includes aerobic conditioning and strength training.
*Snow training starts in December once the slopes open. It helps to get our skis and legs working again. The team trains several days over Winter Break to prepare for the first race.
*Races start in January. They are every Saturday of January and part of February for a total of 6 weeks. There will be a schedule in December with the designated ski resort listed. For the 2001 season, the first race will be Saturday Jan. 6 at Timberline.
*There is a Varsity team and a JV team. There is a men's team and women's team for each division. Racers are selected for teams depending on their abilities. There may be a time trial prior to the races to assist the coach in team placement.
*On-snow training for the 2000-2001 season will start in December. See attachment for Training Schedule.
*There are typically no activities planned during finals week.
MEETINGS & SIGN-UPS
Metro League meets monthly 3-4 times before the season begins to organize the whole race season. Coaches and a parent rep attend.
Westview Ski Team has several pre-season information meetings for new and returning ski racers and their families. A more detailed description of the team is available and registration forms are handed out. The meeting will be near the end of September. If you are on a sign up sheet you will be notified by mail. There are also posters at the high school announcing the meetings.
There are no tryouts for spots on the team. By signing up and paying the required fees, a student is on the ski team.
PROGRAM COSTS
All costs for the Ski Race program are paid for by the ski racers, their families and fund-raisers. We receive zero funds form the athletic department or the school district. It is the commitment of the team to keep all costs as low as is reasonable. There are fund-raisers during the season to help raise funds. Also, we have arranged various discounts at the Mt. Hood facilities for race teams (ticket prices) that are substantially below regular prices.
The fees go directly to paying for Metro League fees, State fees, liability insurance, bus fees, coaching fees, equipment repairs, office supplies, etc.
See attachment for Season Fees and Refund Schedule for specific details for this season.
PARENTAL PARTICIPATION & OBLIGATIONS
It is essential, as in most sports, for participation by all parents throughout the season. Because of our geographic distance to our sports training area (Mt. Hood), it is even more essential for parents to be involved. Ski racing is a labor intensive activity. It takes about 75 people to organize and run all of the operations of each race day. For this reason, the Metro League requires help from each team, each weekend. For parents, this involves:
1. Each ski racer is required to have a parent or responsible adult help at least two times on the mountain as a race worker. This can be one parent two times or both parents one time, etc. With the teams being smaller, it may be necessary to help three times on the mountain.
2. Each race family is expected to help with the team activities. Helping with a fund raiser, organizing the end-of-season banquet, race worker coordinator, making lunches on our assigned day are a few examples.
3. Carpooling. On most race days there are no buses. The race workers for that day drive and offer rides to those racers in need of transportation. It is still primarily the parents' responsibility to get their racer to the mountain on race day, in the event there are not enough carpool rides.
4. Be supportive of your child, of the team and of the coaching and management staff by providing positive encouragement and making sure your child gets to all training and races on time.
TRANSPORTATION
Transportation to the mountain will comprise both of buses and individual drivers.
1. Buses. Funds are being raised to add as many buses as possible. Please note that the number of buses will be adjusted depending on final bus costs, other costs, etc. If enough funds are raised, more buses may be added.
2. Carpooling. Usually the race workers offer rides on race days. Individual families going to the mountains offer rides also if they have space.
3. Cancellation of trips or buses. If the school is closed due to inclement weather on the day of a scheduled night-training bus, then the bus and trip will be canceled. All other conditions for cancellation will be decided on an individual basis the day before the trip or as soon as possible. Conditions for cancellation may include, but are not exclusive to, dangerous road and weather conditions, road closures or too few team members taking the trip.
4. Driving Requirements. No person under 21 years of age may drive a vehicle transporting ski racers to or from the ski area for either a training day or a race day. This is a State regulation. The team will be disqualified for one or more races.
2000-2001 SEASON FEES AND REFUND SCHEDULE
To alleviate any confusion about the Westview Ski Team's policy on the fees and refund policy, information is supplied below for clarification.
Each racer will pay for the 2000-2001 season $425
*This pays for Oregon State and Metro League fees, coaching, buses, insurance, equipment repair, office supplies, lunch supplies for our turn for race workers.
Each racer will pay a refundable deposit $ 50
*This will be refunded at the end of the season when the race worker responsibilities are met for that racer. A parent or responsible person must perform race worker duties at least twice, possible three times, per racer per season.
If fees are received November 10, 2000 or later, there
is a late fee. No exceptions. $25 No team member can participate in dryland training, ski training or races until all forms are turned in and fees paid.REFUND POLICY
100% By Nov 15th; 50% from Nov 16th thru Dec 1st. No refunds after December 1st .
LIFT TICKET FEES
Discount ski lift tickets will be available on training nights (approx $12) and for day training/races (approx $25). We are asking for a $100 ticket deposit per Racer before training. The racer is expected to add funds as the season progresses to cover ticket fees.
